Coming from Australia

Yoga teacher training in India for Australian students

SHORT ANSWER

Australian students travel on India's e-Tourist visa, about US$25 for 30 days. Yoga Australia registers overseas 200-hour graduates at Instructor level, but requires around 10 hours of supervised in-person practicum as supporting evidence — arranged at home, after you return, with a registered mentor.

Recognition

Will a 200-hour from India be recognised in Australia?

Yoga Australia does recognise Yoga Alliance-approved 200-hour training for registration at Yoga Instructor level, so an Indian 200-hour is a legitimate route — but with a condition worth knowing before you fly. Registration requires supporting evidence of around 10 hours of practicum teaching in-person classes under a qualified, registered mentor. That is arranged in Australia after you return, not here, and it is not something any Indian school can provide for you. Budget time for it. Be aware too that the Australian domestic standard is 350 hours, so a 200-hour qualification will sit below what locally-trained teachers hold; that matters for some studios and not at all for others.

Yoga Australia

The principal Australian body. Its own accredited courses run to 350 hours rather than 200, which is why Australian-trained teachers often have more hours than their international peers.

AUSactive

The fitness-industry registration body. Relevant if you intend to teach in gyms and health clubs rather than dedicated yoga studios.

The 30-day e-Tourist visa covers the course; the one-year multiple-entry suits anyone stopping in Asia on the way.

What catches Australian students out

Australians rarely fly to India without stopping somewhere, and a stopover in Singapore or Bangkok on the way home is common enough that the 30-day window gets tight. Buy the one-year version if there is any chance of that. Apply at least a week ahead — the authorisation usually arrives within 72 hours, but Australian applications sometimes take longer over the December holidays.

Getting here

Flights from Australia

Routes

Sydney and Melbourne have direct services to Delhi; Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide connect via a Gulf or Southeast Asian hub.

Typical fare

A$1,100–A$1,800 return, sharply higher over the December school holidays

Flying time

About 13 hours direct from Sydney, 17–22 hours with a connection

Delhi to Dehradun is a 50-minute flight or about six hours by road. Coming off a 13-hour flight, most Australians take the morning flight up rather than the drive.

Best months to come from Australia

September to November and February to April. December and January flights are the most expensive of the year out of Australia, so late February and October are usually the best value.

Paying from Australia

We price in US dollars, so the Australian dollar cost moves with the exchange rate. Pay by card and let your bank convert — international transfers from Australia carry fees that are rarely worth it.

Also worth knowing

Three things that apply only to Australian students

Plan the practicum before you leave

The 10 supervised hours are the step people forget. Line up a registered Yoga Australia mentor at home before you fly, so the hours can start as soon as you land back rather than months later when momentum has gone.

The seasons invert, and it matters

Our best months, September to November and February to April, fall across the Australian spring and late summer. October in Rishikesh is warm and clear while Australia is heading into its own warm season — a genuinely easy time to be away.

Insurance is arranged at home

Australian professional indemnity and public liability cover is generally tied to registration with Yoga Australia or AUSactive, not to the certificate itself. Sort the registration first and the insurance follows.
